History
The beginning of IDESCO or…. the marathon
Everything started in November 2011, when a bunch of international degree students decided to get together and take action on the international matters of the community. We had our first official meeting on January 24th 2012 where we brainstormed and analysed our options, challenges and opportunities available. By the end of the meeting we all decided that we need to form an association like a student club that will take care of all the currents matters of the international degree students (MSc & PhD, Finnish and Internationals)
After that, we had several meetings with the JYY student union where we got extremely helpful advice on how to proceed in order to form our association. The secretary of International Affairs (Sanna Patja), the Office Secretary (Maria Lilja), and the Vice-chair of the Board (Hanna-Mari Savolainen), were of a great help and support in our first steps and throughout the process of registration at the Finnish Association Act. As all student associations have a name and a logo, it was our tasks to come up with something that would represent our vision and the purpose of our club. It was a truly funny evening at Libri (the cafe of the main library) where each one of us had a pen&paper and tried to come up with something! One picture thousand words: In the beginning a silent table surrounded by thoughtful faces and afterwards laughters, happy smiles and crazy jokes coming out of the drafts. Of course we kept some of the papers just to remember those moments!
And yes! after all we came up with IDESCO, which stands for International Degree Student Community (of Jyväskylä).
And as the story goes, we then formed our bylaws, which are the official rules of our student association. At this point again we have to be thankful to the ladies mentioned above and also to our PR coordinator (Lotta Maijala) for her contribution in translating everything into Finnish since the official language of registration could only be Finnish or Swedish. (We dont master any ) Under this link you can find online our bylaws in English: Bylaws of IDESCO
The Founding meeting!
Finally, the day has come and we are ready to hold the official founding meeting where the Board Members were elected and appointed and the Charter of Foundation was signed.
